Xiaomi has been releasing flagships back to back with great camera setups. From the Mi 10 Pro packing a 108MP primary lens in a quad-camera setup to Redmi K30 Pro Zoom, which is capable of 30x digital zoom via an 8MP telephoto lens.
But camera smartphones’ actual potential can only be realized by complimenting UI and software. This is where MIUI 12 comes in. Among many interesting MIUI 12 features, Xiaomi has made several changes to Xiaomi’s default camera app.
So, here is the list of new features in the MIUI 12 Camera app —
MIUI 12 Features: Camera App Improvements
1. Custom Function Layout
MIUI 12 Camera app features a new layout where you can keep your favorite camera modes at the forefront while others can be put away in the new “More” tab. One can choose to keep 2-8 camera modes on the front. In the More section, Mi users can also arrange the camera functions.
At the top, tapping on the menu tab brings up all the pro camera functions upfront. Users can choose frame size as well as shutter delay right from the home page. This is different from MIUI 11 camera app where reaching these camera settings would take at least four steps. Last but not the least, there are new icons for all camera modes.
2. Magic Clone
The latest camera feature of MIUI 12 can create virtual doppelgängers in a single photo or video captured. Magic Clone is located in the “More” section of the camera app.
The feature is currently supported by the Mi 10 series. However, it has been rolled out in MIUI 12 recent beta build implying it will arrive on other Xiaomi devices as well.
2. Panel-based Camera Mode
Xiaomi has introduced another new layout to access the multiple camera modes in MIUI 12 camera app, however, the feature is only available in the beta version.
The new “More panel” mode brings a panel-based UI rather than the tab-based UI that MIUI users have known for years. Swiping up brings the additional camera modes and swiping down brings the camera settings.
3. Voice Shutter
Another cool feature of the new MIUI 12 camera is the Voice Shutter that can click pictures upon listening to voice commands. It currently works on voice commands in Chinese, but we will likely see a global version of this MIUI 12 feature as well.
Upon activation, the red shutter button changes to the Voice Shutter icon, which means the camera is ready to hear voice commands.
The camera app in MIUI 12 can recognize the audio and add real-time subtitles while shooting a video. The feature is similar to Google’s live captions for videos that was introduced last year.
5. Camera Interface color and Shutter sounds
A small but important nonetheless tweak is the option to change the camera app interface color. Mi users can choose yellow, pink, purple, blue, and green as color options.
Talking about small tweaks, there are now four-camera shutter sound effects — texture camera, art camera, film camera, and vitality camera. Both camera functions can be found under the “Customize” option in the camera app settings.
6. Snap Mode
The new MIUI 12 feature eliminates the need to install a separate camera app for spying. Upon toggling on Snap mode in the camera app settings, users can click pictures of users even when the screen is off via the volume buttons.
Interested users can get MIUI 12 updates before the OTA (over-the-air) update via different methods. One is via downloading the MIUI 12 China Beta ROM, however, bear in mind that you will need to flash the ROM manually using a custom recovery.
